Note - In this class we use Word 2007 (not Word 2003).

You may use Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7. If you have Windows XP then just do the Windows XP assignments and exams. If you have Windows Vista then just do the Windows Vista assignments and exams.  If you have Windows 7 then just do the Windows 7 assignments and exams.

Once you are enrolled, do not send email to hurley_daniel@smc.edu!!

The threaded discussion at ecollege is for communication with your classmates and me in this class. I will respond to your questions there within 24 hours. For correspondence of a personal nature, use the email system within ecollege.

Note that you will be dropped from the class if by the end of the 3rd week:

1. you do not turn in any homework or

2. if you do not take the midterm.

Also, for all exams in the course you may use the internet to find answers to any questions that you are not able to find in the book.

Note for all of the assignments: If the book states to print something, send it to a file and submit it as an attachment with your homework assignment.

Turn your homework in on time - this represents your asynchronous attendance in the class.

Upload to the ecollege dropbox for "Homework week 1 - autobiography"  1 page (a minimum of 300 words) telling me about yourself, why you are taking this course, and why online. Also, I would like to know how you found out about cis 1 online before you signed up for it at the beginning of the semester.  Note that I am concentrating on content rather than grammar!  Insert the text into the dropbox dialog - place the assignment in the textbox of the eCollege dropbox, do not send it as an attachment.

For any questions that are not in the book, you may use the internet to find answers. The exam is timed - you have 2 hours to finish.

Turn your homework in on time - this represents your asynchronous attendance in the class. 
Check the eCollege gradebook regularly. Homework turned in by Sunday night will be graded by Monday night each week. Each assignment is worth 14  points. There is a 50% per week deduction for late homework, and there is a 50% deduction for homework uploaded to the wrong dropbox at eCollege.

To turn in a homework item to the ecollege dropbox:

1. Click the dropbox tab near the top of the ecollege screen.

2. Click the 'Submit Assignment' hyperlink.

3. Click the dropdown menu and choose the basket for the particular homework that you want to turn in.

4. Either insert the text you are to turn in or add all of your attachments as specified in the assignment.

5. Click the 'Submit Assignment' button.

Focus on the second part of the movie (parts 5 through 11 on youtube)  entitled the Jupiter Mission.  It starts approximately one hour into the movie, comes after the moon scene, and is about one hour in duration.  You may, of course, watch the entire movie which has interesting philosophic implications about the origin and destiny of humans.  The Jupiter Mission portion which we are focusing on deals with artificial intelligence.
Upload to the ecollege dropbox "Homework week 8 - thoughts on HAL" a summary of your reactions to HAL. Note that I am concentrating on content rather than grammar in your summary.  Insert the text into the dropbox dialog - place the assignment in the textbox of the eCollege dropbox, do not send it as an attachment.

Homework and exams will not be accepted after the final day of the class and there is no 'extra credit' in the course.
