Once you are enrolled, do not send email to hurley_daniel@smc.edu!!
To
turn in homework, ask questions,
make comments, or ...
send everything to
cs3onlineSpring2005@dhurley.com
In all
email contacts please remember to include your last name, first
name, SMC ID, and section number. Example: Smith, John,
Student ID-123456, section 1427. You may also want to include a
phone number where you may be reached. Make all of this the first line of the body of the email (not the email subject).
Note that there is a 25%
deduction for homework turned in without identification.
Use the email subject line to tell me what your message is about.
For example, a subject like "Homework week 2 - reaction to The
Age of Spiritual Machines reading" is much more informative
than "homework".

you are taking this course, and why online.
Also, I would like to know how you found out about cs3 online before
you signed up for it at the beginning of the semester. Was it the online
schedule of classes; the physical schedule of classes; a flier posted on campus
- (if so, where was it posted); word of mouth; other?
Note that I am
concentrating on content rather than grammar! Make the email
subject-heading read - "Homework week 1 - autobiography".
Send 1 page (a minimum of 300 words) summarizing your reactions to The Age of Spiritual
Machines readings (prologue pages 1-6 and pages 14-36). Note that I am

Machines reading". Do not send a summary, but rather your response to
Kurzweil's ideas. Address as many specific points as possible and refer to Kurzweil by page number.

The finals for Discovering Computers and Programming Logic and
Design are
scheduled for
5-23
through
6-2.
Although you may take them in any order, these exams must both be
taken between these dates. The reason for asking you to finish a few
days early is that many times a student will try to take the exam
and have technical difficulties or not get around to it until after
the last day of class. By giving an early target, it eliminates
shutting such people out and giving them an F or a D after they have
performed well in all other respects.
The
final for Discovering Computers covers Chapters 8-15 and consists of 150 multiple
choice and true/false type questions on terminology from the book.
The exam is timed - you have 3 hours to finish.

Rent and
watch the movie 2001: A Space Odyssey.
Focus on the second part of the movie entitled the Jupiter Mission.
It starts approximately one hour into the movie, comes after the moon scene, and
is about one hour in duration. You may, of course, watch the entire movie
which has interesting philosophic implications about the origin and destiny of
humans. The Jupiter Mission portion which we are focusing on deals with
artificial intelligence.
